Who we are
A Higher Standard of Education.
Hexagon Academy is a supplemental enrichment academy for homeschooling families in the Greater Manassas area. Expert instructors and small, hands-on classes, Pre-K through 12th grade, held to a higher standard.
How we're built
What Sets the Standard
Expert instructors
Every class is taught by a vetted subject expert, chosen for skill and for how they teach. Never parent volunteers.
A real method
We teach the map, not the directions. Every class takes a child from a real question to their own answer.
Mastery, no ceiling
We never teach to an average. Master the foundations, and for any child who wants more, there is no limit.
“I was looking for a community I couldn’t find, so I built it.”
From the founder
Why I Built This.
I wasn't trying to build a business. I was looking for something I couldn't find. A real community for my own kids and the families around me, a place that felt like family and still took learning seriously. When I couldn't find it, I built it.
It started at my kitchen table. For years I opened my home to homeschool families in Manassas and taught their children for free. Math on the floor, science on the counter, little ones and big kids learning side by side and laughing while they did it. More kids showed up than I had room for. The community came first. The school is just the bigger room we finally needed.
What I wanted for my children is what I want for yours. Real friends and a real classroom, with people they look forward to seeing every week. No eight-hour institutional day. You pick the classes your child needs, on the days that fit your family, and you stay the parent who runs your homeschool.
And I built it to a standard. The best teaching I could find, by experts who love this work, held to the highest standard, at a price a homeschool family can actually carry. I have four kids. I know how the costs add up.
The kids can't wait to come back. That's the best sign I know that we're doing this right.
Maryam
Founder & Director
Still the teacher in the room.
The founder
Meet Maryam.
Founder and director. And still the teacher in the room.
Maryam built this for her own kids first. She has four of them, and she wanted what she couldn't find anywhere nearby. Real friends for them. A real classroom with people they look forward to seeing every week. The freedom of homeschooling without the eight-hour day. So she made the place she needed, and opened it to the families around her.
Before any of this, she spent years working with refugee communities, helping adults who had never sat in a classroom learn to read, count, and earn their GEDs. That work shaped her whole approach: it's never about where a child starts, and believing in someone out loud changes what they become.
She is writing a book on early childhood education, on how young children actually learn and why curiosity and play come first. And she is still in the classroom every day, not behind a desk. In the room, knowing your child's name, watching them work a problem out for themselves.
What we stand for
The Six Pillars
Six sides of the hexagon. Six things every child can count on in every class.
Family-Centered Formation
Your home stays the foundation. We partner with your family to form the whole child, and our instructors do the teaching so you never have to.
Wonder & Inquiry
Every class opens with a real question, not a worksheet. We protect a child's curiosity instead of drilling it out.
Knowledge-Rich Learning
Real subjects taught with real depth. Language, history, science, literature, the arts. Substance over buzzwords.
Hands-On Mastery
Real understanding comes from doing, not from memorizing. Kids build it, test it, and practice it until it's theirs, with no ceiling for the child who wants more.
Character & Virtue
Honesty, kindness, courage, and follow-through. We also teach kids to speak up and to disagree well.
Guided Independence
Every child works at their own pace. No child held back, none pushed past where they belong. We guide them, then trust them to find their own way, recover from a miss, and lift the kids behind them.
The difference
We're Not a Co-op. We're Not a Traditional School.
Paid professional instructors
Vetted in full. Not parent volunteers, so you never have to teach or assist.
Per class, per term
No full-year contract and no lock-in. Enroll by the quarter or the semester, one class or a full schedule.
A la carte
Pick exactly what your child needs. Classes stay small, 10 to 12 typical, 15 max.
Founder in the room
Maryam still teaches and knows every child by name. The personal attention of a private tutor with the structure of a real academy.
Every option, on your schedule
The full range of real academics and the classes that grow a child, taught by expert instructors to the highest standard. You choose the subjects, the days, and the pace.
What families say
A community that takes learning seriously.
Community isn't an add-on here. It carries the same weight as the teaching and the method. A private circle of homeschool families who want more for their kids, where children come back week after week and the friendships grow up alongside them.
In class, kids don't just learn next to each other. They build with each other. Team projects are part of how our classes run. A child works out a hard problem on their own, then turns to the kids beside them to take on a harder one together. They learn to share the win and lift the kid who's stuck.
As our families grow, we're building toward teams and sports too. That's where we're headed.
