By third grade kids want the real game, with rules and a score. So they get it. Team sports, relay races, tournaments, fitness challenges they actually try to beat. Competition is part of it on purpose, because learning to lose a round and stay in a good mood is a skill and it has to be practiced somewhere. They run hard, and the fitness comes as a side effect of wanting to win. This is also the class where a quiet kid finds out they're good at something in front of other kids.
